Ken Carter Fireplace relief

Untitled (Fireplace Relief)

The relief shows Adam and Eve at the gates of an orchard with a figure of a man climbing over the gate to get to the apples. It is in three sections, the standing figures (Adam & Eve) are cast in cement fondue while the section above is made in lighter resin & fibreglass. All have an aluminium gelcoat.

This is an impressive piece, it's fantastic that you are able to bring it into your home. I love the contrasting forms of the figures - especially the Adam vs the 'classical' looking male one in the tree. Is he a classical deity do you think? The whole thing is thought provoking; Adam and Eve have almost become caryatids, and that sets up a lot of questions for me about what the figure in the tree may represent.

Hi Mike,
Yes, it's great to have it in New Zealand after we grew up with it in Devon. I too wondered about that third figure climbing over the gate and looked for the story again. It remember reading that the serpent was cursed and condemned to slither on his belly forever. Some interpretations suggest the serpent was half human to start with, being able to speak and reason with Adam and Eve. Some depictions show the serpent to be female.
